What type of jeans should I wear?

Jeans are not just jeans. They are an expression of your style. That's why you decide what kind of jeans you want to wear. But we can give you a few tips to help you look good, feel good and do good.

Choose jeans that are comfortable and fit perfectly. Because comfort is key. Also look for a timeless look, so your jeans will always be in style, and you won't have to buy a new pair every season. Finally, invest in slow fashion jeans that don't follow denim trends so you can wear your favourite pair for a longer period of time and contribute to a sustainable world.

4 golden tips for finding the perfect jeans fit

Raise your hand if you have ever bought the wrong pair of jeans. Chances are the jeans end up in your wardrobe or get thrown away. And that is not good for the environment at all. In fact, the fashion industry is responsible for around 10% of global carbon emissions. That's more than international flights and maritime shipping combined. This is why it is important to find the perfect pair of jeans that you want to wear again and again. Below are four golden tips to help you do just that.

1. Figuring out your body shape

The first step is to find out what your body type is, as not every style fits every body type. Below you will find all the information about the different body types.

  • Hourglass: An hourglass figure has a narrow waist. The width of the shoulders and the (rounded) hips are the same.
  • Wide hips (triangle): A pear figure, also known as a triangle figure, has wider hips and a narrow waist. The shoulders are smaller than the hips.
  • Belly (round): An apple figure has a rounder shape with a fuller waist and rounded shoulders. It is best to accentuate the slim legs.
  • Inverted triangle (athletic): An inverted triangle figure has shoulders that are wider than the hips. The waist is narrow.
  • Straight (rectangle): A rectangular figure has shoulders, waist, and hips that are about the same width. The legs are usually slim.

2. Find a suitable waist height

Over the past few years, low-rise, mid-rise and high-rise jeans have come and gone in fashion. But did you know that getting your waist right is crucial to finding the perfect pair of jeans? This is because the height of your waist determines where the jeans will sit on your body. So choose a waist height that is both comfortable and looks good.

  • Low-rise: Low-rise jeans sit below the belly button and have a low waist. This fit accentuates the hips.
  • Mid-rise: Mid-rise jeans are the most popular. This versatile height allows the jeans to sit 'naturally' around your waist, creating a natural waist and classic look.  They allow you to visually 'hide' your tummy.
  • High-rise: High-rise, or high-waist jeans, sit above the belly button, giving your waist more definition. They also visually lengthen your legs and allow you to 'hide' your tummy a little bit.

3. Choose the right width and length

The width (W) and length (L) of the jeans is also an important factor in finding the perfect pair. After all, you don't want to buy jeans that don't fit properly.

Note: The width and length of jeans are usually measured in inches. Use a measuring tape in inches, or use a conversion tool to convert centimetres to inches. Or check our size chart to find the right size.

Determining the length

The correct length is determined by measuring the inseam. This is the distance from your crotch to the floor.

  1. Stand with your feet slightly apart.
  2. Place a measuring tape against the inside of your leg.
  3. Measure from your crotch to your ankle in centimetres and convert to inches.

You will have the right length of trousers when the back of the jeans is just kissing the ground and the front of the jeans is resting on your instep. Measure without shoes on so you know you are not standing on your jeans when you walk.

Determining the width

The best way to find the right width is to measure your waist.

  1. Wrap the measuring tape around your waist.
  2. Make sure the tape is neither too tight nor too loose.
  3. Measure the number of centimetres of a full circle and convert to inches.

4. Discover different type of jeans

Hopefully, you know your body shape, preferred waist size and lower body measurements. Let's talk about the different types of jeans.

Skinny jeans

Skinny jeans are tight-fitting trousers from the waist to the ankles that follow your leg shape. This style accentuates the contours of your body and is therefore best suited to hourglass or rectangular figures.

Slim fit jeans

Slim fit jeans are tighter than straight fit jeans, but looser than skinny jeans. They fit tightly around the thighs and knees but offer a little more room at the calves and ankles. This style is ideal for the apple, rectangle and inverted triangle figures.

Tapered jeans

Tapered jeans are wider at the top and gradually taper down. This means they offer more room at the thighs and knees, but have a slimmer fit around the calves and ankles. This style works well with inverted triangles and rectangles.

Straight leg jeans

Straight leg jeans have straight legs. They offer a casual style and timeless fit that is looser than skinny or slim-fit jeans, but not as loose as baggy jeans. Straight jeans work best with apple, pear, inverted triangle, trapezoid and rectangular shapes.

Flare jeans

Flared jeans are wide from the knee to the ankle, adding volume to the bottom of the legs. This style works on pear-shaped, apple-shaped and rectangular bodies.

Loose fit jeans

Loose fit jeans fall more generously around the body, especially at the hips, thighs, and legs. If you don't want to accentuate your contours, for example if you have an hourglass or diamond figure, loose fit jeans are a good choice. If you have a trapezium figure, this style can help to balance your shape.

Wide leg jeans

Wide leg jeans have straight legs that widen from the hips to the ankles. This style is ideal for anyone with wider hips, thighs or straight legs. Wide leg jeans are the perfect choice for pear-shaped, diamond-shaped and rectangular bodies.

Boot cut jeans

Boot cut jeans have straight legs that flare from the knee to a wider opening to fit comfortably over boots or shoes. This style is ideal for hourglass and pear-shaped figures. If you have a rectangular figure, boot cut jeans can add shape and balance.

Boyfriend jeans

Boyfriend jeans have a straight, loose fit. They look like you borrowed your boyfriend's jeans because they have a lower waist. A rectangular body or an inverted triangle looks great in boyfriend jeans.
